University of Cambridge: Teaching, Methods Training & Supervision
2024
Abstract
At the University of Cambridge, I served as a Lecturer in Sociology, where I was responsible for both teaching and supervising postgraduate research. I convened and taught graduate courses on social inequality, development, and environmental governance, including leading the MPhil pathway on “Marginality and Exclusion” and delivering lectures such as The Economy of Neocolonialism, Climate Crises and Liberation Ecologies, and Structural Violence & the Security State. In parallel, I led research methods workshops that trained students in qualitative and quantitative techniques, as well as in the ethics of fieldwork in sensitive contexts and effective research design.

The Challenge
My approach to teaching at Cambridge emphasised bridging theory with real-world application. For example, I would challenge students to translate academic concepts into policy briefs, service design challenges, or other practical outputs. Several of my students produced work that later informed NGO programs or public policy discussions; a testament to my focus on actionable research. I also integrated my own interdisciplinary experience into the curriculum. Drawing on my background in political economy and environmental studies, I introduced case studies ranging from climate justice movements to the impacts of digital surveillance on communities. This enriched the learning environment and demonstrated how academic research can directly inform solutions in domains such as urban planning, technology design, or environmental policy.
Conclusion
During my tenure at Cambridge, I also continued to refine my research skills. Collaborating with colleagues, I delved into emerging work on data ethics and digital society (in line with the department’s focus on sociology of technology). I found that being in an academic environment allowed me to stay at the cutting edge of research methodologies – knowledge I have since carried into industry research roles. Overall, my time at Cambridge solidified Navid Yousefian’s reputation as an educator who is deeply invested in mentorship and in the societal relevance of research, values that I carry forward in all my projects.
