My Story

as it goes

An uncommon blend of academic rigour and practical impact defines Navid Yousefian’s career. Trained as a political economist (PhD, University of California, Santa Barbara), Navid built his expertise studying how power and policy shape livelihoods in marginalised regions. His doctoral research (conducted through multi-year fieldwork across ethnic minority provinces) culminated in a book with Palgrave Macmillan, Peripheral Dependency in Iran, which examines how free-trade zones promised decentralisation but often reinforced central control. This early work laid the groundwork for Navid’s commitment to linking data-driven analysis with human-centred insights, a theme that carries through all his endeavours.

Beyond academia, Navid Yousefian has spearheaded innovative projects in both non-profit and tech sectors. While completing his PhD, he founded the See You in Iran cultural organisation, growing it from an online forum into a thriving social enterprise with over 140,000 community members and an eco-cultural guesthouse. In parallel, he led community-based research at the Mehr-o-Mah NGO in Tehran, where he co-designed family support programs that shifted income to mothers, thereby reducing child labour and enabling school re-entry for at-risk youth. These early leadership roles honed Navid’s ability to conduct ethical research in sensitive contexts and to translate findings into concrete community outcomes.

Navid’s postdoctoral journey has been equally diverse. As a Research Fellow at the Environmental Governance and Political Economy (EGAPE) Lab in California, he developed scenario models for decentralised energy systems and advised on equitable infrastructure investments. He then consulted for Spark NGO, managing a team of five researchers across Iran to assess Afghan refugees’ access to education, healthcare, and employment. That project combined a survey with over 10,000 respondents with in-depth interviews and workshops, resulting in policy recommendations that local authorities later adopted to improve housing and integration services. This mix of quantitative and qualitative leadership showcased Navid Yousefian’s strength in multi-method research design and stakeholder engagement.

Navid also brought his expertise into the classroom and the tech industry. As a Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, he taught on topics of inequality, development, and environmental governance while mentoring MPhil and PhD students through rigorous research projects. He emphasises practical application, guiding students to produce policy briefs and service design insights from their academic work. Transitioning to the tech sector, Navid joined Nym Technologies as a lead researcher, where he navigates the intersection of user experience, security, and policy. At Nym, he has driven research on censorship-resistant tools and misinformation governance, ensuring that product innovations align with privacy rights and regulatory landscapes. Throughout these roles, Navid Yousefian has remained committed to utilising research as a tool for positive change, bridging worlds to build solutions that are both empathetic and effective.
